Play Guitar By Ear - Finding The One Chord

Play Guitar By Ear - Finding The One Chord The first important step in learning to play guitar by ear was to introduce the eight bar song form. Now, it s time to develop a system for identifying common harmonic patterns used by successful songwriters. Musical content: The key skills to learning to play by ear is the ability to understand musical form and content . Remember, all musicians who play by ear have learnt to do this, they just don t know how to explain the process! Finding the one chord: Our next step in learning to play guitar by ear will be to learn how to play two chord songs . As we have discovered the eight bar song format is a great place to start as our basic musical template, we will now need to learn the underlying mathematical codes for creating successful, logical chord progressions. Professional musicians use a numbering system to identify chord progressions that makes it easy for them to learn songs quickly and change keys effortlessly. It s extremely simple, and as we all know ... simple works! Here s how it works: The first chord we need to be able to find by ear is the one chord, this is the key chord. When a performer says "let s do XYZ song in the key of G" the one chord for that song would be G . Chord one reference chart: Key of C ... 1 chord = C Key of C# ... 1 chord = C# Key of Db ... 1 chord = Db Key of D ... 1 chord = D Key of D# ... 1 chord = D# Key of Eb ... 1 chord = Eb Key of E ... 1 chord = E Key of F ... 1 chord = F Key of F# ...1 chord = F# Key of Gb ...1 chord = Gb Key of G ... 1 chord = G Key of G# ...1 chord = G# Key of Ab ...1 chord = Ab Key of A ... 1 chord = A Key of A# ...1 chord = A# Key of Bb ...1 chord = Bb Key of B ... 1 chord = B In 98% of two chord songs the very first chord is a the one chord, as you can see we are off to a great start. More good news ... 100% of two chord songs finish on the one chord. That means if we were trying to play a two chord song by ear we would have a good idea what the first and last chords were! Here is an example of a two chord song in the key of D . | D /// | ? /// | ? /// | ? /// | | ? /// | ? /// | ? /// | D /// | As you can see, we re not sure what all the chords are, however we do know the first and last chords. I ll include one more example in the key of A . | A /// | ? /// | ? /// | ? /// | | ? /// | ? /// | ? /// | A /// | Each baby step forward in learning to play guitar by ear will build confidence in our ability to work out other songs by ourselves, eventually there s no limit to how many songs you can learn and remember Mike Hayes is a teacher, author, speaker and consultant. Jim Brickman Escape Pop Music CD Review

Jim Brickman, the richly talented Pop artist has released him latest album titled Escape and Wow! It’s really a good one. I wish it weren’t the case but, it’s not everyday that I get a CD from an artist that I can just pop in and comfortably listen to from beginning to end. There is usually a song or two that I just can’t force myself to get through. Not at all the case with Escape. Every track is enjoyable and was pretty easy for me to listen to from start to finish. Escape is a nicely varied, mix of 12 tracks that are very well written songs by this clearly outstanding artist. Most of the songs display a lot of the kind emotion that makes for a really great listen. Clearly drawing from what I can only imagine are him own personal experiences. At different points touching on the most real emotions like love, and the pain of failed relationships can certainly be heard. If you’re a Jim Brickman fan this is a CD your collection flat cannot be without. In fact, this is one of those CDs that you don’t even have to be a fan of Brickman, or even Pop to know is good. This is just good music. Period. While this entire CD is outstanding some of my favorites are track 5 - Never Alone, track 9 - When It Snows, and track 12 - My Angel My Bonus Pick, and the one that got Sore [...as in "Stuck On REpeat"] is track 1 - Waterfall. What a nice track! Escape Release Notes: Jim Brickman originally released Escape on October 3, 2006 on the SLG Records label. CD Track List Follows: 1. Waterfall 2. Escape - (with Marc Antoine) 3. Why I Hate Epiphone Guitars Review

Consider this my blanket review of all Epiphone guitars in general. I go to Guitar Center a lot. Usually it s just to check out a bunch of guitars through different amps. I bought one guitar there, and I buy them online sometimes too. About a year ago I found a cool deal on Musicians Friend on a Epiphone Dot Studio guitar. The Dot Studio is basically a budget version of the very expensive and legendary ES335 (several thousands of dollars). This guitar was awesome! It was black on black, and those humbuckers just screamed through my Marshall! It had lots of tone, and was very light (which is great on stage). I loved that guitar...for awhile. After I gigged it out a few times, the bridge volume know fell inside the body cavity, held on by only the volume knob itself. The nut had come loose. I popped off the volume knob while holding on to the pot pliers, tightened up the nut, and that was that. I tightened up all the other volume and tone knobs too. This was the first time I began to feel like Epiphone was a really low quality guitar. I d never seen a brand new guitar, direct from the factory with loose volume knobs. In fact, I d never owned a guitar for years where the volume knobs got loose on their own. So I gigged this black Dot Studio out like 6 or 7 times. I noticed one night that the input jack nut was coming loose. I tightened it up by hand and all was well for the night. But that made me take notice of the input jack from that point forward. I always checked at home and before gigs....and ended up hand tightening it all the time. It was as terrible pain, and I don t know why they didn t install a locknut or lock washer at the factory. Long story short, it had to be tightened so many times that it caused one of the wires attached internally to the input jack to start to short out, and eventually just fall off. I ended up buying an AllParts input jack new at Guitar Center and soldering it back in myself. The guitar was ok.....for awhile. On stage I switch from bridge to neck pickup a lot depending on the song. I started to notice at first a crackle, and then sometimes just cutting out going from neck to bridge. I would have to switch it back once or twice before it kicked in. I ve never had problems like that before on a new guitar - that told me it was a cheap input jack. I had already noticed when I soldered in the new input jack how thin the internal wiring of the guitar was (compared to others I had taken apart). Problems with the wiring, and the switch dragged on for months. When I installed the new input jack I had put a few dots of gorilla glue at the edge of the nut to keep it from coming loose again. Eventually I sold the guitar when I had owned it just under a year. I ended up buying the Ibanez Artcore I play as my main guitar now in it s place. I have not had a single problem with the Ibanez that I had with the Epiphone, and it has the input jack on the tail just like the Epiphone did. And I can see inside the F-holes of the guitar that the wiring is significantly thicker than it was on the Epiphone. My only complaint with the Artcore is that the pickups aren t nearly as biting or clear as they were on that Dot Studio. I have a friend that loves Epiphones. He s tried to tell me that maybe the one I had was just a lemon. I disagree. I have played dozens of Epiphones in 3 different guitar centers and various music shops. Each and ever one has had loose knobs and or input jack. Also, the setup and quality is very hit or miss. Here s a prime example. I went to Guitar Center today and played several instruments. I saw this one guitar that was stunning from afar. It has natual laquer and wood, beautiful finish, semi-hollow body 335 type guitar. As I got up on it I saw it was indeed an Epiphone Dot Studio. Being a glutton for punishment I picked it off the rack and plugged it in. It played nice. In face it screamed, and was full of tone. And in this newer model, the input jack had been moved from the tail to the top just right of the bridge. The input jack was tight. I tuned it up and played. Nice action, nice feeling neck, even the toggle switch for neck and bridge was a newer kind and seemed better. Then I switched from neck to bridge and went to turn the volume up for that pickup...and it turned around, and around, and around, and around. The nut had become loose and fallen off that volume. I check the others, and they were also indeed loose. I played a flame top Epiphone Les Paul last weekend, and it s input jack and volume knobs were loose (and the action was terrible). I played two Dot Studios that were on clearance and the action was way off the fingerboard, and one had a blemish on the headstock. Loose volume knobs as well. The wost was 2 months ago when I was very interested in getting an SG. SG s are very expensive, so I of course checked out the Epiphone SG s (I know - idiot, duh!). They had this one that was white with gold hardware, triple humbucker. Beautiful guitar...nice action, good setup - I liked it a lot. It was on clearance for $340 - a bargain (so I thought!). I plugged it in and tried the neck pickup - nice! I switched to bridge, and no sound! I turned every volume and tone knob on 10 - still no sound! The mid pickup switch was the same. This guitar only had volue on the neck pickup! I thought this guitar was so nice, that I was willing to get it fixed if need be. I took it over to the department manager looking for a deal. He said "no way - it s already on clearance". I said "but wait, it s broken - the wiring is bad and you re selling is as new !". He wasn t willing to budge one iota on the price. They also weren t willing to fix it, I had to buy the guitar AND PAY FOR the repair! I was pissed and ended up not buying the guitar. I don t care if it was clearance or not - they didn t even know the wiring was bad until I brought it up to them! How can you sell something as brand new that s broken, and not be willing to send it back to the factory? See a pattern here? Every Epihpone I pick up in any store, any make or model has a problem or a blemish. The quality is so low, I would never again take one (without gutting it) as a stage guitar. If they can t even make sure the hardware is tight and the electrical connections are good, and spend an extra $2.50 on a quality switch and input jack - I am not interested in buying an Epiphone guitar EVER AGAIN!! The ONLY way I would consider it would be if it were on extreme clearance (less than $300), and I was going to have it rewired with new knobs, switch, and input jack! If you are considering an Epiphone guitar - BUYER BEWARE!! Look for the things I have pointed out. You will get much more for your money if you take a look at other mid-range priced guitars from Fender, Ibanez, Jackson, Paul Reed Smith (the LTD line), ESP, Dean, or others. I will be reviewing many of these guitars in the future to give you as much information as possible! John Pratt plays lead guitar in T-Town Sound - a classic rock cover band in Toledo, Ohio . Blues Guitar Frequently Asked Questions

This article is for beginning guitarists who want to be introduced to the beautiful and soulful world of blues guitar. Guitar is one of the best instruments to play the blues on. It can be a very expressive lead instrument or it can provide a solid background for a singer or another instrumentalist. Here are some common blues guitar questions that many beginners may have. I hope that these questions help, but remember, nothing can substitute for a good teaching tool. See my bio. section for one that I recommend. What chords are important? • Standard e-form and a-form barre cords are perfect for playing the blues. • The form for 12 bar blues is I-I-I-I, IV-IV-I-I, V-VI-I-I. Basically, those roman numerals represent chords within a certain key. For example, in the key of G it would be G-G-G-G, C-C-G-G, D-C-G-G. What scales are important? • Pentatonics are king of the blues. There are tons of places on the internet to learn pentatonic scales so just do a google search. Take the time to learn all the positions so you can play all over the neck. • Minor pentatonic is the best and most "bluesy" sounding scale to use. • Major pentatonic allows you to switch up your sound to a lighter happier feel mid-solo. It is easy to switch between the two! You just slide the pattern that you are using towards the headstock four frets and you will go from minor to major, or slide it towards the body of the guitar 4 frets to go from major to minor. Is acoustic guitar or electric better? • Either one is fine for the blues. They both have advantages and disadvantages. • Electric guitar gives you some cool advantages like string bending and distortion. Plus, you can get some radical effects. • Acoustic is great for smaller venues and for playing rhythm guitar. It will give you a more organic and old-school sound. How do I sound like my favorite pro? • Different pros have different sounds, so you need to decide which one you want to sound like. • If it is your goal to sound like Stevie Ray Vaughn, you better work on your technique. • If it is your goal to sound like BB King, you better just practice singing along with your instrument and making your playing very melodic. • If it is your goal to play like Robert Johnson, get an acoustic guitar and start learning to play the blues chords. What is the secret to being an incredible blues guitarist? • This one is simple... practice, practice, practice!!! • Divide your practice time up between different skill sets so you are not focusing too much on one area. This way, you can become a well-rounded musician. This will allow you to play with other musicians more. I hope that I was able to answer some of your blues guitar questions. I also hope that this helps get you on your way to becoming an incredible blues guitarist. Remember to check out the links in my bio section for some great tools. Beginners Guitar Chords - 3 To Get You Started

If you ve just started out playing the guitar, this lesson will show you three basic chords that you can then use to play a lot of different songs, after a bit of practise (the famous 3 chords !). Step 1 - Tune Your Guitar Before starting a guitar practise session, always get into the habit of tuning your guitar. If it s out of tune, then any chords you play on it won t sound too good, so to avoid getting discouraged, tune it up first. The following is a quick guide to putting your guitar in Standard Tuning: 1 -||--|--|--|--|--|-- (highest-sounding) 2 -||--|--|--|--|-X|-- 3 -||--|--|--|-X|--|-- 4 -||--|--|--|--|-X|-- 5 -||--|--|--|--|-X|-- 6 -||--|--|--|--|-X|-- (lowest-sounding) If you re playing the guitar by holding the neck with your left hand, then if you tilt the guitar towards you, you should see the strings arranged like this. You tune the strings one at a time, by putting one finger on the fret marked with an X in the diagram, and playing that string, together with the string above it (ie higher than it). So start off by tuning string 2 (next to top string): put your left index finger on the 5th fret on string 2, as shown in the diagram, and while playing this note, play string 1. If the notes don t sound the same, adjust the tuning peg on string 2 until it matches. Then do the same for strings 3, 4, 5, 6. Watch out that you put your finger on the 4th fret when doing string 3, for all the other strings, use the 5th fret. The C Major Chord Ok, now hopefully your guitar s in tune, so let s move on to learning the first guitar chord - C Major. The chord diagram for it looks like this: 1 -||-- |-- |-- |-- (highest-sounding) 2 -||- 1 |-- |-- |-- 3 -||-- |-- |-- |-- 4 -||-- |- 2 |-- |-- 5 -||-- |-- |- 3 |-- 6 -||-- |-- |-- |-- (lowest-sounding) In this guitar lesson, we ll only be using the first 3 frets on the guitar. The numbers in bold on the chart show you where to put your fingers. Your index finger is 1, middle is 2, ring finger is 3, then little finger is 4. So the steps to forming this C major chord with your hand that s holding the guitar neck are as follows: Put your 1st finger on the first fret of string 2, and hold it down Add your 2nd finger on the second fret of string 4, and hold it down Finally, add your 3rd finger on the third fret of string 5, and hold it down If you followed these steps, you should have all three fingers holding down strings 2, 4, and 5. When pressing down on the strings, it s important to put your finger as close as possible behind the fret. So not right on top of the fret, and not too far away either. This way, the string won t make a buzzing sound when you play it. In this chord, strings 1 and 3 have no fret held down - you just play the string as it is (this is called an open string ). When starting, it might be hard to get string 3 to sound, as your other fingers might be stopping it from ringing. If it doesn t ring to start with, don t worry about it, just play the other strings. One important point when putting your fingers on the frets to make the chord, is that the fingers should curl down onto the strings from directly above. This way, each finger is only holding down the fret it s supposed to, without affecting other strings next to it. This helps you get a cleaner sound to the chord. So if you ve managed to get your fret hand fingers in place to hold down the chord as shown, then strum the strings with your other hand (either with the plectrum, or just your fingers). If you re holding down the chord correctly, then you should hear the C major chord sounding. With this chord, the bottom string (string 6) isn t normally played, so try to strum just strings 1 - 5. Congratulations - you ve just played the C major chord! If it sounds a bit strange, then you might need to check your guitar s in tune, or check you ve got the right strings/frets held down. Practise playing this chord a few times, until you get the hang of it. The G Major Chord Moving on to the next chord, the diagram for G major is as follows: 1 -||-- |-- |- 3 |-- (highest-sounding) 2 -||-- |-- |-- |-- 3 -||-- |-- |-- |-- 4 -||-- |-- |-- |-- 5 -||-- |- 1 |-- |-- 6 -||-- |-- |- 2 |-- (lowest-sounding) In the same way as you did with the C major chord, try to form the chord step by step, starting with your 1st finger on string 5 at the 2nd fret, then 2nd finger on string 6 at the 3rd fret, finally your 3rd finger on string 1 at the 3rd fret. When you can hold all three fingers down on the correct frets at the same time, try strumming this chord. Strings 2, 3, 4 should ring freely, so try to ensure your fingers curl down onto the fretted strings without obstructing them. All strings should be strummed for this chord. Sometimes it can be a bit of a stretch between fingers 2 and 3, so practise this one until it feels more comfortable. I personally use fingers 2, 3 and 4 for this chord as I find it more natural, and it also makes it easier when switching back and forth between G Major and C Major. Basically, don t be afraid to experiment a bit, and find what works best for you. The D Major Chord OK, so here s the last of the three basic chords, D major: 1 -||-- |- 2 |-- |-- (highest-sounding) 2 -||-- |-- |- 3 |-- 3 -||-- |- 1 |-- |-- 4 -||-- |-- |-- |-- 5 -||-- |-- |-- |-- 6 -||-- |-- |-- |-- (lowest-sounding) Again, form this chord step by step, one finger at a time. When you can hold all 3 fingers down, try strumming it. Usually for the D major chord, the bottom two strings aren t sounded, so try just to strum the top 4 strings if you can. Practise! Well those are the three basic chords. The next step is to practise them over and over, until you can form them reasonably quickly each time. What you find is that when you first learn how to play the chords, and are forming them step by step, placing each finger in turn, it seems to take ages to position each finger. With plenty of practise however, your hand gets used to forming the shapes, with a kind of finger memory , and it gets a lot easier. Take plenty of breaks in between practising them, and you ll find that in each practise session, forming the chords gets easier. Link Them Together Once you ve got to the stage where you can form each of these three chords fairly easily, the next step is to try changing from one chord to another. For example, say you re playing the C major chord. Try strumming this for a few counts of 4 (ie count 1 2 3 4 1 2 3 4 aloud as you re strumming the chord), and then change to one of the other chords (G major or D major). For example, you might come across chord progressions (sequences of different chords) written out like this: | C / / / | C / / / | G / / / | G / / / | D / / / | D / / / | So here, for each bar (part between the | symbols), there is a count of 4, and in this progression, you play C major for 2 bars ( 1 2 3 4 1 2 3 4 ), then G major for 2 bars, and finally D major for 2 bars. Again, as with when you were practising forming the chords, it will seem to take a long time to change your fingers from one chord shape to another. Just keep practising though, and it will get easier, to the point where as you re counting aloud, as you count 1 when you re changing from one chord to another, your fingers will form into the next chord shape without you thinking too much about it. Keep At It! Well that s the end of this lesson on basic chords. Once you can get to the stage where you can play the above chord progression fairly smoothly, without too much of a delay when changing between the chords, you can try finding some simple arrangements of songs that use just these three chords. One example would be The Beatles Hey Jude , a basic version can be played with these chords. Good luck with your guitar playing! Chris Davies is a guitarist with many years experience. You Can Learn to Play the Guitar

In high school, did you ever dream about starting your own rock band? Want to duplicate the soothing sounds of folk tunes for family and friends? Does your favorite musician work magic with a Gibson ES 335? Is Jimi Hendrix your idol? It doesn’t matter the reason why you want to play the guitar - a seed has been planted and now it is time to nurture the desire. Where to begin? Playing guitar (whether for fun or professionally) takes patience and determination. By following a few tips, you can harness your passion or interest for the instrument. You will also find that fueling your creativity and developing this new form of expression will take time. Great guitar players do not blossom overnight. Purchasing a Guitar Before you start learning the ropes of guitar playing, you’re going to need an instrument to carry out your lessons. The type of music you wish to play will determine the kind of guitar you require. For example, an acoustic guitar is used to generate the sounds of country, ragtime or folk. The body of the guitar is large and hollow, creating a sound that many deem “natural.” Rock music often utilizes an electric guitar, which offers a rather distinctive amplified sound. Additional guitars to look into include the steel, solid body, archtop, resonator, bass and twelve-string guitar. With the purchase of a guitar, there are other necessary pieces of basic equipment. A guitar pick is required to help play the chords of your instrument. The size of guitar pick is quite small, prompting easy breakage and it can also be easily misplaced. This is why beginners should have a good number of guitar picks on hand. When purchasing picks, the medium gauge varieties are suggested because they are less apt to break. You should also invest in a comfortable chair. Getting Lessons While some guitar players are able to naturally experiment with chords by ear and strum along with less guidance, others require the assistance of structured lessons. There are numerous ways to learn how to play the guitar. If you are able to afford a private tutor, you can take advantage of one-on-one instruction, which may speed up the learning process. Sometimes, beginners benefit from group learning, which provides a wealth of constructive criticism. The Internet also offers a way for beginners to privately learn online. Some websites offer a computer keyboard lesson on learning scales, which some beginners find quite easy. Whichever approach you take in learning to play guitar, you should know that setting goals for yourself makes the process more rewarding. Achieving personal milestones further motivates your desire to find a common ground with the instrument and who knows how far your lessons will take you. Recognizing why you want to play guitar in the first place will also help you to better accomplish your goals. Some people want to learn to play for fun, peaking with a performance in front of family and friends. Others would like to share their talents with a slightly larger crowd, probably visiting a few coffee shops or open-mic nights. Then there are the masses of learners who have bigger dreams of taking to a stage in front of thousands. No matter what the goal is, you can’t get there without loads of practice. What You Will Learn Guitar lessons usually start with building a basic foundation, such as how to properly hold the guitar and establishing correct posture when playing. There is a wide range of techniques involved in playing the guitar and after a few lessons, you may start to find your niche. One of the most important things to focus on when playing a guitar is understanding and mastering the chords. There are books and charts to help you along this important part of the process. There are many different chords to familiarize yourself with and taking them one at a time will lead to better results. Additional areas of guitar instruction may include learning how to properly hold a pick, memorizing scales, tackling music theory and selecting a music style. Instrument maintenance, such as tuning and caring for your guitar is also of importance. Sticking With It Staying motivated is one of the best things you can do when learning to play the guitar. It is easy to become frustrated with a new project and abandon it before truly experiencing any benefits. On some days, you may have to dig deep to reclaim your passion and dedication. Other days, you could be composing the next pop hit. Give the process a chance and remember that it takes time to get the hang of this instrument. The best thing you can do is continue to practice and soon, you will reap the rewards of hard work and focus. Guitar Performance - Make The Most of It!

Getting ready for any type of guitar performance can be a little scary at first, but if you are well prepared, you will find the experience much easier to handle. Whether you re playing with a band, or by yourself; are a seasoned performer, or a rookie; there are several things you can do to make the most of your performance. First and foremost, realize that you are not the first one on the block to ever feel jittery about playing your guitar in public. It s a common experience among musicians, and being a little nervous can even work in your favor. There is always a mysterious struggle that goes on inside me when I m about to give a performance. I think it s something akin to the Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde phenomenon. Two voices bantering for my attention, the good guy and the bad guy. Mr. Hyde tells me that I must be out of my mind. What makes me think I m good enough to get up on a stage and play my guitar before an audience? Who do I think I am anyway? On the other hand, Dr. Jekyl tells me that I ve worked hard practicing my guitar and know the material well. It will be fun to share what I ve got with others so they can enjoy hearing it too. Be brave, live life to the fullest and go for it! Because I am basically a shy person, it would be much easier for me not to play my guitar in public. But there is a certain drive, almost a need I have, to express myself through music; especially with regard to playing my own material. Yes, there is a certain risk involved; it s called being vulnerable. Anything could happen... A string could break (been there), you might forget the words or chords to the song (been there), you might make a mistake and have to start over (been there too). But no matter what happens, the world will go on and you will discover that people are very supportive and encouraging overall. I m always amazed when I get positive feedback over a performance that I thought was absolutely awful. It provides me with more incentive to continue on. So how can you make the most of your guitar performance? Below I ve put together several suggestions for you to consider. They are in no particular order of importance. Some may be relevant to you at certain times and irrelevant at others. Just take what you need and ignore the rest. 1. Develop a repertoire (song list) of approximately ten to twelve songs and memorize them. 2. Make sure you select songs with different tempos and rhythms for your performance in order to create and sustain interest from your audience. 3. Pick songs with varying degrees of difficulty, but don t overestimate yourself. Be realistic about your own ability. You want to pick songs that you enjoy and are able to play well on your guitar when no one is watching. If you find that you are constantly making mistakes in a particular song, give yourself more time to get it down before actually performing it in public. 4. Practice playing with distractions. You will be amazed at how beneficial this can be. I remember playing at an outdoor concert once where the band that was to follow mine was warming up right behind us! Tamborines and all. One of the bandmembers actually started asking me questions about my guitar performance and wanted to know how I learned to play like that! It was very weird, but all I could do was ignore her. After that experience and a few others like it, I began practicing my repertoire with the T.V. and radio turned up pretty loud to mimic such distractions. 5. Start your performance off with something that you find easy to play on the guitar and graduate to the more difficult pieces later. This will help you to warm up your fingers and get comfortable with being on stage. I usually like to start with a strong, upbeat song in order to gain the attention of the audience and rid my stomach of butterflys. 6. Music With Staying Power

Have you ever wondered why some music just seems to have staying power? Like the energizer bunny, it keeps on going and going. Take the recent Grammy Awards for example. The Rolling Stones and ex-Beatle Paul McCartney were both nominated. Paul even gave his first live performance at a Grammy awards ceremony this year. I remember the days when there was a constant debate raging over which group was the greatest- The Rolling Stones or The Beatles. These two super-groups reigned supreme. Many loyal fans took sides in this debate and were fully convinced that it was their favorite band which made the best music. For me, it was simple. I loved the Stones, but the Beatles were by far my favorite group. Afterall, when the Beatles were beginning to see the effect their music was having on the kids of their generation (known as Beatlemania ) the Stones were also charting with a song called, "I Wanna Be Your Man." But it just so happens that Lennon-McCartney wrote this song and gave it to The Stones as a favor. Later, when The Beatles masterful Sgt. Pepper album was released in 1967, The Stones released an album shortly after which many considered to be a copycat version of Sgt. Pepper. Here is another interesting fact to consider. The Beatles stopped giving live perfomances after their concert at Candlestick Park in San Fransisco on August 29, 1966. They decided they wanted to spend more time in the recording studio and just make music. Many people thought they were crazy and would quickly lose their fan base and popularity if they stopped giving live performances. They didn t listen. What happened as a result? They kept cranking out hit songs and their popularity grew even more. The question that was constantly on everyone s lips back then was, "when are the Beatles going to give another concert?" Now, this is not to take anything away from The Rolling Stones. After The Beatles officially broke up, The Stones became my favorite group for awhile. I spent a lot of time listening to their music and saw them in concert three times. I even got back stage once. But they never inspired me to think deeper about life, or to question why. The Beatles did. I began a spiritual journey in search of "Truth" (which I eventually found in Jesus) largely due to the impressions and impact which The Beatles had made on me. Musically speaking, these two super-groups definitely had, and continue to have, staying power. I still get students young and old who want to learn their songs on the guitar. The recent Grammy nominations also reveal that the creative juices of Paul McCartney and The Rolling Stones are still flowing and will probably continue to do so for some time yet. The lesson we can learn from this is that good music never dies. And I, for one, am really glad that Paul did finally "pass the audition." Cheap or Expensive Instruments - Can Cheap Guitars Really Rock and Roll?

Cheap or Expensive Instruments - Can Cheap Guitars Really Rock and Roll? Nowadays, you can buy a pretty good electric guitar from as little as $70 and there are a number of good brands making them. Although most cheap guitars have a very good quality, professional musicians prefer hand-made electric guitars created by professional luthiers. But, most players, specially non-professionals, just need a good, reliable and affordable instrument that make some loud rock and roll. Squier, for example, it s a Fender, so you can rest assured in the trust of such a well established company. Kramer, another company owned by Gibson produces most of its cheap guitars in Korea too. Ibanez are making really awesome guitars nowadays. Most players considered them really non-expensive but also very reliable guitars. Of course some time ago the story was not the same. Traditionally, "cheap guitars" always meant "bad guitars". Poor design, constant loss of tone, low-quality materials. But, fortunately, today they are made fairly well. First, long gone are the days when the Japanese were making bad cheap guitars . Let s take an example: Vantages (a Japanese brand) are considered "cheap guitars" but their 12-string model is built like a tank, solid, tight construction and it plays fantastic. If those affordable guitars sound as good as more expensive ones... I see no problem at all! Second, the reduced tension of the strings (three are tuned down in this tuning) may have made those guitars more playable. Well, for some reason I enjoy buying, playing, and working on these great rock and roll pieces of art. Overall, more expensive guitars are better in the eyes (ears) of the average customer than the cheaper ones, but deep searching the net for great and unexpensive guitars is more than a hobby, it s a wonderful way of keeping my mind healthy. Although I could always swap the bridge out, but then the overall price goes up... I know. Not having money was the driving force behind buying cheap guitars and making them work. So it pays to sometimes get one of these low-budget instruments and do hardware upgrades yourself. Don t be scared. In general most of them have good fretboards and wood to wood fitting. Additionally, Azerrad, an American author, journalist and musician, writes that early in their career, Sonic Youth "could only afford cheap guitars, and they sounded like... cheap guitars!". Kurt Cobain had some cheaper guitars he used too. But, in my opinion, the talent always overcomes the budget. The great thing about these instruments nowadays is that they are actually playable, and we can make really good sound on them! I am a professional medicine doctor, the face I use to pay my bills. And I m an amateur but passioned guitar player. Fortunately I don t have to pay my bills with my guitar skills :) And finally, I have a small website about... Cheap and Hot Guitars! (Nope, It is NOT about medicine at all!) Check out: www.hotguitars.org

CA Guitars Model 8M-CE (GX Performer by Composite Acoustics)

CA Guitars Model 8M-CE (GX Performer by Composite Acoustics) Formerly called the GX Performer, the CA Guitars Series 8M-CE is a powerful guitar that sounds and looks great. One of the most comfortable of guitars, the 8M-CE takes musical instrument ergonomics to a new level. With bevels on the top of the back side, the guitar fits snugly against one s body. Additionally, the 8M-CE has the ultimate in cutaways. In addition to a sharp cutaway that allows easy access to the upper frets, there is also a cutaway on the back of the guitar because there is no heel block (a benefit of carbon fiber construction). As such, you may reach the 19th fret with little effort, and the 20th fret is just a tiny reach away. Indeed, it almost feels like playing an electric guitar with such easy access to the guitar s upper frets. Carbon fiber guitars are renowned for their durability, resistant to temp and humidity. But the true wonder of these guitars is their sound. To begin with, they have great volume; indeed, the first time you play a CA Guitars model you ll have to ease up a bit because you re likely unused to such power. But, you can control that volume and thus you can do some interesting things - hammers and slides come through crisp and clear with little effort. CA Guitars 8M-CE sounds especially good with slide playing, as do all the carbon fiber guitars that I ve played. Putting a slide to a carbon fiber guitar produces a sound somewhere between sliding on a regular wooden acoustic and a resophonic guitar. You get just enough of the echo and metallic sound that highlights the slides, yet retain the warmth of an acoustic. Features include Goth 503 tuners along with LR Baggs Imix electronics, and a hardshell case. Michael Stone owns a website that sells carbon fiber guitars and has played the acoustic guitar and mandolin for nearly twenty years.

Guitars Are Great Babysitters

Kids love guitars. Why? Because they are exciting, probably the most exciting musical instrument today. Look at rock bands today. In almost all case the guitarist is the lead performer, or will play lead on many songs. The guitarist is often the driving force of a band, always right out in front. Also guitars are loved because they are fairly easy to come by. I see beginning acoustic and electric guitars sold at department stores. I don’t see many fiddles or clarinets sold in stores, except music shops. And guitars can be relatively cheap compared to other band instruments. And guitars are well suited for a child (or adult) to learn music in general. One can play a guitar and sing along; try doing that with a clarinet. One can learn and play chords. The guitar is quite portable too, unlike say a piano. All in all, the guitar is an extremely versatile instrument. But like with any instrument, learning the guitar takes time and practice. One has to learn to read music, tune and hold the guitar properly, learn to strum the guitar. But it is not so difficult for a beginner to learn a few basic chords and quickly be able to play a song. A beginner can learn to play a simple song on a guitar in no time, given the right learning tools. A good book or DVD on learning the guitar will show a student how to read music. Reading a tablature (a notation showing where to place fingers when playing) is as important as reading a staff of actual notes. The learning aid should show pictures or video as examples of finger-placement, as well as holding and strumming the guitar. Also the program should show the differences between acoustic and electric guitars, the types of songs played on each, and how to select a good guitar without going overboard on price. I think what’s really important is to let the student have fun while learning. If it becomes a chore, it then gets boring and the student will lose interest. Also, a good learning program will have the students learn simple songs to begin with, to give the student a sense of accomplishment and get them to keep going. Now some parents may object to a child learning electric guitar, which may involve a lot of loud jamming that will make the walls shake. But I think parents should be happy if their kids are interested in something that they can learn from, keep their interest, and share with their friends. And it could be profitable to them some day! How to Decide What CD To Give Them

Various music, like haggis, is an acquired taste. What some people love, others hate. While one person swears by Celine Dion, another will want Pantera. They will hate the other s music, and there will be no middle ground between them. This in turn creates the problem of buying a musical gift for someone who you don t really know that well. If this the case, you should avoid buying a CD for them. If you feel, for whatever reason, that you have to buy a CD for someone, then you have to be very careful that you get something they like. Otherwise, you may never have the chance to hear the music you so lovingly bought them, as it will sit in the packaging for all of eternity. When buying a CD for someone, make sure you know their musical tastes. This is the most important point. Take a look at their current CD collection and make note of the types of music they have. If they have a lot of Classic Rock CDs, then cater towards that. You can also talk to people who know them best about what kind of music they like. Of course, you have to be careful here. If their friends want to play a trick on the recipient, they may tell you he loves Garth Brooks, when in fact, he can t stand country music. As usual, a gift certificate for a music store is an excellent way to go. Instead of taking the time to choose something for them, meanwhile risking to get them the wrong thing, just sit back and let them do their own shopping. Don t give them cash, though, because then they may not even use it on music at all. You do want to give them a musical present as their gift, right? The last option is an easy one, but it gives away the surprise. You could simply ask them who their favorite band is and if they have the newest CD by them. If they say they do not, then go and buy that for them. The jig may be up but at least they get what they wanted. Music taste changes all the time, and what someone liked one year, may not be true the next. Make sure you research what they like, talk to their friends and put some thought into the gift. If you get them a CD they like, it will be a lot more valuable in terms of the kindness of the gift, than in terms of the price you paid for it. They will thank you again and again for it. Now, don’t get me wrong gear does matter, but you have to develop your core sound first. This is one of the things people often breeze past and never look back. If you buy gear according to what someone else is using or what someone told you was good, then you are not really getting to the root of your core sound. Everything can be built off of the core sound, but just like any structure, you have to have a good solid foundation to start with. This wont be a problem for you once you learn... How one simple technique can improve your guitar tone over 100% The 5 biggest secrets that guarantee you a home run style success for any style of guitar tone you are creating…. rock, country, blues, jazz, etc…. The most successful methods and techniques for long-term guitar tone. How to easily improve your guitar tone in minutes without spending any cash. A surefire restring method that hundreds of guitarists are now using. How any guitarist playing any guitar style can use these secrets and tips to gain instant killer guitar tone. The single most important thing no one else is telling you about how to get great guitar tone. All these answers and more can be found at "How To Get Great Guitar Tone" , but I’m here to tell you that the sooner you start developing your core tone the quicker and easier everything else will be. What is your core sound??? Good question. Your core sound is… Your guitar plugged directly into Your amp using no effects pedals or anything at all in the loop, including tuners Into your cabinet with desired speakers Using the best sounding cables for your guitar speaker cab. This is the stripped down version of your core guitar sound. However, it gets much deeper when you start analyzing things such as what guitar, what amp, what cables, what pickups, these things do matter as well, but you need a starting point. I suggest starting with guitar you have now, plugged straight into the amp you have, and try all kinds of settings to get the most pleasing sound to you. After you have dialed in what you consider the best settings, write down at least five pros and cons about the sound. This is the crucial first step, and it needs to be thought out very carefully before you move forward in adding other elements into the chain. NOTE : A good tone will (usually) not be too shrilly on the top end, and not too loose and saggy on the low end, with a good amount of midrange coming through. The goal is to get a focused sound that is pleasing to the ear, and extends off the stage into the audience naturally. Some sounds just fade out after walking five foot in front of the amp. This usually happens, because of a poor choice of equalizer settings. Hopefully this sheds some light on where to start in your quest for great guitar tone. Esteban - Is Esteban The Best Guitar Player On The Planet?

Esteban - Is Esteban The Best Guitar Player On The Planet? Should You Take Guitar Lessons? So you ve been debating whether or not to take guitar lessons. So, you think you’d like to learn to play guitar, but you’re put off by the high cost of lessons? Guitar lessons, in some form or another, are a necessity for anyone wanting to learn to play the guitar. When somebody is playing the guitar, it is assumed that the person has taken some guitar lessons from an instructor or that he has learned to play the instrument all by himself. People who are considered experts in playing the guitar insist that the only distinction that sets a good guitarist apart from a distinguished guitarist is based on how they apply the approach “feel the beat” to their tune using their instrument. An experienced teacher Some websites are run by other newbies also honing their guitar playing so make sure the tutor is a qualified guitarist. Private Lessons: This is the best way to learn to play the guitar if you can find the right teacher. Once you ve got past the basic guitar lessons in these tutors, you might decide the best way to teach yourself is to play your favourite songs by ear. If you re just starting, it might be best to go for the cheapest, most basic guitar lessons you can. Instead of giving the guitar player in your life cash to go towards the lessons, you can contact the teacher and pay for the lessons up front, or have them give you a gift certificate. Guitar lessons are a great gift for the guitar player in your life because you can take them no matter which level you are at. Video-based lessons- In my experience, pure video-based lessons are a good “icing on the cake” to help you learn, but not typically a good foundational guitar lesson program. The best thing about a guitar lesson ebook is that it does not just contain the lessons that the learner has to know but also has some added features making the learning process easier and more fun. Many ebooks about guitar lessons contain songs that a beginner can use to learn how to play the guitar as easily and as fast as possible. Easy guitar songs initiate proper pacing and rhythm enabling the beginner to learn to play the guitar easier. Sorting through the many options can be made easier with information dedicated to this topic on various guitar websites, such as this online guitar lessons guide. These online lessons found on the internet can help a person to play the guitar in an instant – relatively speaking. Don’t think that online guitar instruction is just for the novice, though, because many of the available lessons will teach you, not only the basics, but many advanced techniques as well. Group Lessons: Learning guitar in a group setting can be less intimidating for the beginning musician. Luckily, there are simple techniques that can help the beginning guitar player to develop these muscle memories and ear training for proper chord changes. The one drawback to online guitar lessons is that you don’t have a teacher right there in the room with you to help you place your fingers on the right strings and show you a specific chord. Once you get the beat connected to your system, take hold of your guitar, and start hitting those strings. Now you know all about the guitar, it is now time to learn how to hold it correctly before you start to play anything. Generally, once you know the basics on how to look after the guitar, it is good to start off learning the basic chords before trying anything else. There are two ways for a person to start strumming the guitar. For a person who wants to learn, he may check the internet where he can find new updated learning tools that will help him learn to play the guitar in just a short period of time. By using your ear and a TUNED guitar it is relatively easy to find the correct key of a song and even determine the chords and scale. Not much music theory in this bit of information, but how do you determine the key of a song with just your ear and a guitar. Now just move this scale anywhere you want on the neck of your guitar, but play the same relative positions on the fretboard. If you do this for 5 minutes every time you pick up the guitar, you ll be amazed how quickly you ll fingering will improve. All beginners will remember the first time they played the guitar for an extended period. A little discipline, regardless of whether you have an inborn talent or not for playing the guitar, can better your chances of becoming a good guitar player. We have a complete selection of lessons on all these issues at our guitar playing web sites. Guitar Practice - Make It Your Priority!

Every student realizes that guitar practice is important if they wish to become a better musician. Even so, many have trouble establishing a regular practice routine. Other responsibilities have a way of squeezing them into a work-a-holic lifestyle, leaving little room left for personal pursuits. Even teens and children are over-stretched these days with school and other extra-curricular activities. So, what s the secret to creating an effective guitar practicing schedule? The answer: MAKE IT YOUR PRIORITY! That may sound simple to some and impossible to others, but it is absolutely imperative to becoming a good guitarist. Giving something priority simply means to put it before everything else in order of time and importance. Now, it s always easier to set priorities when there is a desire to accomplish, or reach a specific end result. So, having a goal in mind when practicing the guitar, will help you to maintain your focus and provide a sense of purpose too. According to the Scribner-Bantam English Dictionary, the word "Practice" means: - to work or pursue as a profession - to perform often in order to learn - to teach by frequent repetition; drill In order to make your guitar practice a priority, try thinking of it as you would your job or school work. By this, I don t mean it should be a drudgery, but an important necessity. Schedule a time each day to practice your guitar, and stick to it. Be firm in your decision. Mark it in your appointment book, or on your calandar. You will begin to notice an improvement in your overall ability when you practice the guitar on a regular basis. There will be times when you seem to leap forward, and other times when you don t seem to be getting anywhere. But understand that the guitar is one of the most difficult instruments to become really proficient on, so you will need to guard against discouragement. I have a friend who plays piano, cello and violin. She decided to take up classical guitar and confessed that it was the most difficult instrument she had ever tried to learn. So, you may want to keep notes on your progress for personal encouragement as well as an incentive to persevere. Commitment and determination are two of the most important keys to success in any pursuit. Talent and natural ability are a definite plus, but many talented guitar students lack discipline. In order to succeed, you must learn to cultivate and nurture your natural abilities through regular guitar practice. Skill is developed by continually honing, experimenting and perfecting your gift. Don t just take it for granted, be willing to work hard. All great guitarists have this one thing in common- they made guitar pracitice a priority! So, get yourself started in the same direction by keeping these things in mind... 1. Make your guitar practice a priority 2. Establish a specific time of day to practice 3. Make a commitment to practicing regularly 4. Set short term and long term goals (make a note when reached) 5. Persevere through difficulty 6. Be determined to succeed Above all else, enjoy playing the guitar and learning new things- have fun! Think of your guitar practice as an adventure. With so many different guitar styles and techniques, there will always be something else to discover. Life is short, so make some time to do what you love and be happy! Should You Buy Guitar Hero For Wii? The Guitar Hero series has become very popular, with a sweet guitar peripheral and a soundtrack with 40 songs that covers 4 decades. Since the release of the original Guitar Hero, Nintendo lovers have been slighted as they ve had to suffer through two long years without the awesome power of console rock. 10 Tips For Selecting A Guitar Lesson Program

When I began guitar lessons over forty years ago there were few choices for learning to play the guitar. You either bought a book and taught yourself or you called the local music store to set up lessons with a randomly selected live teacher. I was only eight years old when I met my first guitar instructor and I remember it like it was yesterday. He was a part time lounge guitarist that always smelled like cigarette smoke and definitely didn’t enjoy teaching kids. He was impatient, grouchy and didn’t hesitate to yell at me when I nervously chewed on my guitar pick. I didn’t understand him, I didn’t enjoy the lessons and soon wanted to quit. Fortunately my mother understood the problem and talked me into continuing with a different teacher. I was luckier with my second teacher, Miss Mosier. She was a twenty-something hippy that loved kids as much as she loved to teach. I actually began to look forward to my lessons. When she introduced a little finger picking exercise that lead to playing an old Bluegrass song called Buck Dancers Choice, I was hooked. Finally, I was actually learning to play guitar and having fun! Today, due to inexpensive video technology, there are many options that take the guess work out of learning to play guitar. Now it is possible to bring world class instructors into your home to teach guitar for less money and often in less time then it takes to learn from a randomly selected local instructor. Here are 10 tips for selecting a guitar lesson program: 1. The Medium: find a dvd based or online guitar lesson program that offers both video and audio lessons with a book as a reference guide. This combination should work well whether your primary learning style is reading, listening, watching or a combination of all three. 2. Good Production Values: the video lessons should be thoughtfully organized. There should be lots of close ups of both of the instructors hands as they demonstrate each lesson. The audio needs to be clear so that each note and chord can be distinctly heard. 3. Skill Level: If you are a rank beginner make sure that the guitar lesson program states that it is geared for beginners. A beginning guitar program should teach the parts of the guitar, re-stringing and tuning as well as the fundamentals of scales, chords, keys, reading tabs and playing songs. If you are interested in a specialized program like Blues Guitar Lessons check to see what level of skills are required before you begin. 4. The Instructor: ideally should have experience as recording studio musician as well as touring with a band. A college degree in education and lots of hands-on teaching experience are equally important. 5. Music Theory Instruction: should be peppered through out the guitar course. A basic understanding of how scales, keys and chords work can free you from the limitations of just memorizing songs. This can provide the musical tools necessary for writing songs and improvising solos over just about any kind of music. 6. Guided Practice Sessions: this means that the video instructor first teaches you a system for practicing the guitar then plays along with you to help establish good habits. Much enjoyment and progress can be lost due to poor practice routines. In fact, I would be willing to bet that a high percentage of the people that quit do so because of a poor understanding of good practice fundamentals. Only one guitar lesson course that I am aware of gets this exactly right. 7. Jam Tracks: these are usually short recorded songs or rhythm tracks that provide a way for a guitar student to practice playing with a band. Jam Tracks can be invaluable for learning to play rhythm guitar parts in synch with other musicians or while improvising solos. 8. Individual Pacing: a guitar lesson program should provide an environment where the student can learn at a pace that is ideal for their individual learning style. 9. Fun: that’s exactly right, a guitar lesson program should be fun. If it isn’t fun early in the program it will be hard to stay motivated long enough to develop even basic guitar skills. 10. Price: expect to pay about $130 to $200 for a top-notch, dvd based, guitar lesson program that is aimed at rank beginners through intermediate acoustic and electric guitar students. There are many lesson programs available in the $30 to $60 range that have some of the important benefits mentioned above but I have found most of them to be somewhat incomplete and inconvenient. For detailed guitar lesson reviews go to a website like CompareGuitarLessons.com. While a great, organized, video guitar lesson program taught by a top instructor can be critical to learning to play the guitar there are also a few other essentials: - Start out with the highest quality guitar you can afford. Too often cheap beginner guitars won’t stay in tune, are hard to play and just don’t sound very good. A guitar that is priced in the $200 to $500 range will be much more satisfying to play. Why make learning guitar harder than necessary? - Expect that playing the guitar will feel awkward at first but that slowly it will become easier and smoother. Don’t quit. Practice frequently in short bursts of 10 to 20 minutes. When your hands are sore or you start to become frustrated take a break. - Learn how to practice like a professional: this is a significant eakness of many, if not most, guitar lesson programs. Rarely is there enough emphasis on learning how to practice effectively. A good practice routine should have a definite structure and purpose with fun activities at the end as a motivator. Practice sessions that are generally short, frequent and fun usually stimulate rapid learning. Low Cost Zune Downloads

The Zune is the latest craze among the music lovers. Although it s less than two years old, the Zune has become a favorite of entertainment lovers everywhere. Zune plays music and videos, displays images and shares files wirelessly with other Zunes. Even though it s only been on the market a short while, the Zune is competing hard with Apple s iPod, which is currently dominating the digital audio player market. As soon as you get your Zune, your first impulse is to fill it with as many songs and videos as you can. Once you ve put your CD collection on there, you ll see there is still a lot of space to fill! There are two main options for downloading music and videos onto your Zune. Zune Marketplace Zune Marketplace offers over 3 million songs. Each song is 99c to download. This could really start to add up! So Marketplace has introduced the "Zune Pass" which is $14.95 per month, where you can download as many songs as you like. The main issue here is that the songs cannot be played if you let the subscription lapse. So, in effect, you are just renting them. Even with such a wide selection, Zune Marketplace can be disappointing. Zune Membership Sites The second option, and the one I recommend, is to look at membership sites. These sites let you download unlimited movies, music and videos for a one-time charge or for an annual fee. The songs and videos are yours to own, and you can leave at any time. This means you can enjoy unlimited movies, TV shows, music videos, MP3 music, sporting events, games, eBooks, software, programs, and much, much more with a one off fee of between $30-$40. That s unlimited music for life! You can see why the market is changing and more and more people are realizing the benefits of these unlimited Zune download sites. You can find a list of the top Zune download sites at Zune Download Sites or Zune Download Sites Guide .

Ultimate Guitar Buying Guide

Looking to buy your first guitar or an upgrade? This guide will give you some solid tips for purchasing the most valuable guitars for the lowest prices possible. Buy Guitars Online If you want to save up to sometimes 75% or more off MSRP price, you should buy your guitar online. There are a wealth of online music stores to choose from. You may want to consider going to your local music store, finding the guitar you want, then buying it from your computer. What s definite is that you ll almost always find the same guitar cheaper online than in your local music store. Avoid Buying Unknown Name Brand Guitars Both online and believe-it-or-not in your local music stores, retailers will try to pull a fast one on you. You ll see no-name brand guitars with prices jacked up to the same price or even past better guitars. Obviously, this is so the music stores will make more money. Buy low, sell high, right? Personally, I trust only Fender, Gibson, Ibanez, Dean, Jasmine, Epiphone, Squire, Taylor, Norman, Martin, B.C. Rich, and Jackson guitars. There are other big brands that are probably being left out in this article, but if you don t have a clue about buying a guitar, consider choosing from those top names only. Guitars are Crafted for Different Styles of Music It can be tough deciphering which guitar is made for what type of music, because the same top brands normally craft all kinds of guitars for all styles. If you ve never bought a guitar before, you ll want to call up an online music store s 1-800 number (or your local music store s) and inquire about guitar models related to your favorite music, then buy the guitar online. You can often get good advice about purchasing a guitar from guitar website owners and articles, so that s another source. Search for the Contact link to contact a website owner. Most would be more than happy to talk to you about what guitar will fit you best and in your price range, and they d be willing to e-mail you links to guitars suited for you. However, here s a little insight. Fender has the Stratocaster for Rock and Classic Rock, the Gibson Les Paul and Les Paul Epiphone are versatile for many types of Rock and Blues, Ibanez RG Series guitars are great for Metal, and Martin makes a heck of an acoustic guitar. Generally speaking, for Jazz, Blues, or Rockabilly try to buy a hollow body guitar. For Rock-and-Roll you can get away with buying a solid body electric with only one pickup or 3 single coil pickups. For heavier styles like New Rock, Alternative, Metal, and Punk, you ll want two double-humbucker pickups for a screaming crunch. Conclusion to the Ultimate Guitar Buying Guide Good luck with buying your first guitar. Just remember, buy online and save up to 75%+ off MSRP price, avoid no-name brands to get the best value, and buy the guitar that suits your favorite style of music.
