Guitar playing - How Could You Ease Your Mind by Playing the Rock Guitar

My professional skills as a medical doctor have nothing to do with my true passion: the guitar. Ok? Maybe it s no so simple matter. I deal everyday with suffering and illness, so my mind sometimes simply seems to be almost blowing out. I really need something to ease my mind! But I m a passionate rock and roll listener since... well, since long, long time ago, I can t remember for sure, but certainly before I became a doctor. And this passion started, I guess, when I first listened the "Appetite for Destruction" album. Oh, yes, I m talking about the good old Guns n Roses. The CD I struggled to buy (at that time Cds were way too expensive). When I was almost driving my neighborhood crazy, I saved some money again and bought the Metallica s "Black Album". Oh, poor brazilian neighbors! Nobody was used to listen those loud screaming guitars, the angry vocals, the smashing drums around here. It was "lambada", "samba" time (as always...), kinds of music that were just unbearable to me. But I kept listening to that "angry people and devil s" music louder and louder. Then came the second revolution. Always saving some hardly earned money, I bought my first beloved guitar. Ok, it was a cheap one, brazilian electric guitar, but to me it was almost the Gibson Les Paul that was in Slash s hands. It was a blue Giannini Super Sonic brand new, 2 simple pickups, with a small 40 watts amplifier and a yellow second-hand Boss Over Drive effect pedal. This set I will never, never forget. As every single guitar player at the beginning, I quickly realized that playing the hard rock guitar was not that piece of cake. Of course, first things first. Ritchie Blackmore s "Smoke on the Water" was easy. Tommy Iommi s "Iron Man", I had no problems, but I had to practice very hard to make something that sounded more like the Rock and Roll that I love so much. People sometimes just don t understand that a guitar player, better saying, an electric guitar player who loved rock and roll simply was unable to play "bossa nova" at the acoustic guitar. It seems that only at the time I graduated as medical doctor, I was able to explain that asking for a rock guitar player to try some "bossa nova" was the same as asking a neurosurgeon to perform a cardiac surgery. Both of them are doctors, but each one has its own field of expertise. Finally, especially at the medical school, and in my professional practice, I really feel the need to listen, and play some loud rock and roll. It seems that all my day-by-day pressure simply disappears when I m playing my guitar. All my worries, my death-fighting deceptions, all that pressure every doctor is submitted, completely vanishes in the air at the first tone of good rock and roll guitar playing. The Greatest Lead Guitar Playing Myth - What Shred Guitar Is Really All About

There are a ton of theories floating around in the guitar player community about the secret to improving your guitar playing speed. Most of these theories are based on some sort of half truth, but a good part of the time these theories are nothing more than myths and really offer no help to truly improving a person s playing ability or their speed and style. One of the biggest myths out there about achieving faster playing speed is that you can t play fast with thick strings and high action. Most of the proponents of this particular guitar playing myth say that in order to be able to make your fingers fly across the fretboard, your strings have to be thin and the action in the strings needs to be low. The reason this is a myth is because in reality, thinner strings and lower action do not at all make it possible for you to play faster, or better. Thin strings and lower action just reduce the amount of resistance you get when you play. This makes the notes easier to hit, but does nothing for the quality of your tone, nor for your speed and skill. It just makes making noise easier. Playing with thin strings doesn t take an individual who is still an amateur and make them into a guitar master, even if they play faster. What it really takes to be able to play faster isn t lightning quick fingers, at least not at first. The key to successfully mastering speed and any part of guitar playing is accuracy and clarity. A lot of people who get into playing the guitar immediately want to jump into learning how to play fast, and forget all about accuracy. Private Guitar Lesson: Learn To Play Mary Had A Little Lamb

In this guitar lesson I will instruct you on how to play Mary Had A Little Lamb on your guitar. I will use ordinary english words so you don t need to know sheet music notation! Mary Had A Little Lamb can be played on the first two strings on your guitar. There are four notes to learn and we will take this opportunity to learn a little about the guitar at the same time. Guitar lesson: Part 1 We will begin with the first line of lyrics: Mary Had A Little Lamb The first note you will use is called E and is found on the first string on your guitar. This string is called E and is the thinnest string on your guitar. You can pluck this note with your right hand thumb. The next note is D on the second string. To play the note D you need to press down the second string with one of your left hand fingers on the third fret. I suggest that you use your ring finger. Why should you use your ring finger? Left hand fingering on your guitar means that instead of using just one finger on your left hand to play all notes on the guitar you will use the first finger for the notes on your first fret, the middle finger for the notes on the second fret and the third finger for the notes on the third fret. This might feel a little bit awkward at first because most people feel that the ring finger is weaker that the rest of the fingers. If you are persistent you will experience that using these fingers will make it easier to find your way around on the fretboard without looking all the time. Let s go back to our guitar lesson! The next guitar note is C. Press down your first finger on the first fret of the second string to find this note. Play D again. Now the melody goes back to E played three times. The whole sequence of notes will be: E D C D E E E You will probably hear that the last E will be a little bit longer than the rest of the notes. Guitar lesson: Part 2 Here is the next line of lyrics: Little lamb, little lamb The first three notes are D on the third fret of the second string. Make the last one of these notes a little longer. After these notes comes E on the first string. When you pluck a string without pressing down a fret you are playing on an open string. So we can say, play E on the open E-string. Finish this line of lyrics by playing the note G twice. Press down you left hand ring finger on the third fret of the first string. This sequence of notes will be: D D D E G G Play the third and the sixth note a little longer than the rest of the notes. Guitar lesson: Part 3 Let s proceed with the lyrics: Mary had a little lamb The words are identical with the first line. So is also the melody. In other words, the sequence of notes are: E D C D E E E Guitar lesson: Finale The last line of lyrics looks like this: Its fleece was white as snow The melody starts with E on the first open string followed by D played twice on the second string, third fret. Electric Guitars - How Do They Work? The right electric guitar feels smooth in your hands and wraps around your body while you play. She can also sing to you in a way that only you can hear, no matter how much you share her unique sound with others. It s no wonder that the guitar has impacted the world of music so deeply over the last 60 years that it has permanently embedded itself into history. The guitar practically defines cool all on its own, yet the whole concept starts with technology. Surprisingly, the tech talk associated with the electric guitar isn t so far fetched or difficult to understand. So if you love your instrument so much that you re looking to hear how she works, listen up. The first thing you should know is that there are two types of body styles: Hollow and Semi-Hollow. Hollow body: This type of guitar is exactly what it sounds like. Essentially, the center is hollow, like an acoustic guitar. The hollow body allows the sound waves created by the guitar to bounce and ricochet inside it, affecting its sound. This is what causes that twang-like sound that you get from a hollow body electric guitar. Semi-Hollow: These are obviously a lot more solid than the hollow-body and produce a more solid sound. The electric guitar is not meant to sound like an acoustic guitar on a wide scale. In fact, the semi-hollow keeps the sound from bouncing around inside the equipment to give you a more crisp clear sound. Next are the sheer mechanics. Electric guitars pump their sound out by means of magnetic pickups. A pickup is a group of magnets with a coil wire wrapped near or around them. These would be the metallic pieces that subtly vibrate your guitar and you may or may not be able to see your pickups, depending on what guitar you own. When your guitar is plugged in but not being used, the magnetic field associated with your pickup is also relatively still, except for the electricity running through it. As soon as you strum your girl, however, the wire around or touching that magnetic field picks up the changed field, which produces an electrical signal. The wire essentially carries that signal through the pickup and to your audio wire, which is "programmed" to recognize the signals and interpret them to your amp at the other end. At the top of your guitar, on the neck, you ll find next, your tuning pegs. These pegs are holding your strings or wires in place and by winding them tighter, you can produce a higher pitch. When allowing them to hang more loosely, they will produce deeper sounds when strummed. This is, obviously, how a guitarist tunes their instrument, the same way a cello or violin is tuned. The sections along the neck that are marked by bars or lines into evenly measured segments, are called frets. When a guitar is finely tuned and you press at the right fret for the right pitch, your strum is affected by your shortening the string. This is, of course, how you get notes. Learning to read sheet music, of course, will give any guitarist a tool to increase their skills and use their frets properly. The controls that are usually located on the body of an electric guitar alter the tone s brightness by using a simple filter that lowers or raises the frequencies of the pickup. All in all, the simple set up of an electric guitar, using magnets, wire, some steel and wood are what manufacture the amazing sounds that come from them. Quality, clarity and reliability, however, depend on brand, manufacturer and parts. When thinking of great rock performances, often as not it’s the guitarist or the vocalist who get the plaudits – typically with a band situation they tend to have the more in-your-face personalities – the pyrotechnics – the flashiest gear or technique – often it’s left to the drummer and bass player to hold the fort making sure everything hangs together. Crosspicking on the Acoustic Guitar in Bluegrass and Old-Time Music

Crosspicking is a technique in which the flatpick is used to pick a group of strings in a pattern that repeats. Typically, three pitches are played repeatedly against a four-pulse rhythm so there is a continual shifting of the pitches and of the accented pulse. The result is something similar to a banjo roll, with notes seeming to come from everywhere. Micky Cochran put it like this: "Crosspicking bombards the listener with a barrage of notes. As is similar to bluegrass banjo, crosspicking guitar doesn t seem to pause for a breather. A continuous succession of notes pours forth establishing the melody while filling in all of the spaces with harmony notes. Not only does the guitar support itself, with spaces filled harmonically, but crosspicking technique works effectively for supporting other lead instruments and vocals." George Shuffler, who spent 18 years as a member of the Stanley Brothers in the 1950 s and 1960 s, is said to be the pioneer of crosspicking. The crosspicking technique has been mastered by guitarists like Doc Watson, Clarence White, Dan Crary, Norman Blake and Tony Rice. Crosspicking can be used with two open strings against a single string upon which you are playing melody notes on the frets. You can throw a crosspicking pattern in here and there, mixing it in with your other flatpicking techniques. Let s try a crosspicking exercise. We ll use all open strings for this, the D, G and B strings. For the strokes, I ll represent the down strokes (the pick motions away from your face) with the letter "d" and the upstrokes (the pick motions toward your face) with the letter "u." George Shuffler crosspicks with a pattern of two down strokes followed by one upstroke. Pick each individual string in this repetitive pattern: DGB DGB DGB DGB DGB DGB DGB DGB DGB Play the D string with a down stroke, the G string with a down stroke, and the B string with an up stroke, like this: ddu ddu ddu ddu ddu ddu ddu ddu ddu But remember, crosspicking is a pattern of three pitches played repeatedly against a four-pulse rhythm, so in common time (4 beats to the measure, each quarter note receiving one beat), the pattern would look this when each string picked is a quarter note with four quarter notes per measure: DGBD - GBDG - BDGB - DGBD - GBDG - BDGB - DGBG The picking pattern would be: ddud - dudd - uddu - ddud - dudd - uddu - ddud Now let s try something that will probably be a bit challenging. I learned this from one of Steve Kaufman s instructional videos. Crosspick the repeated pattern of DGB, but instead of using the typical "ddu" stroking, play with alternating up and down strokes, just like if you were picking out a fiddle tune. So, although you are playing the repeated pattern of the three strings, your stroke pattern is: dudu - dudu - dudu - dudu - dudu - dudu - dudu - dudu - dudu It will not be easy at first to keep the pattern of the three strings going with the alternating pick motion, but think of your forearm as a pendulum, swinging down, back and forth, to hit the top of each string. The upshot of this stroke pattern is that each note is cleaner, crisper, and makes more of a statement. I use both of these patterns, but I m trying to develop the latter and use it more often, because I think that overall it s the best. Even if it is a little bit tricky at first I would suggest that you use your index finger for the notes on the first fret, the middle finger for the second fret, your ring finger for the third fret and that you play the fourth fret notes with your pinky. The Gibson Explorer Guitar

With its angular body, and sharp headstock the Gibson Explorer is instantly recognisable. First released by Gibson in 1958 (along with the equally famous Flying V guitar) the Explorer was a radical departure from its more famous sibling the Gibson Les Paul. The original Explorer - the X-Plorer (or the Futura as it was initially named) came equipped with twin humbucker pickups, two tone controls and a 3 way pickup switch. The angular headstock featured the tuning keys on the top of the headstock rather than the traditional Gibson three each side. With its looks the guitar was radically different from others in the marketplace. The design of the Explorer was so years ahead of it’s time that initial sales were low and the guitar was quickly discontinued. Needless to say those early models are now highly sought after collector’s items. In the Mid 1970’s, prompted by the success of other manufacturers tributes to the Explorer, Gibson reissued the guitar – sales were strong and the instrument quickly became a mainstay for many artists. The Explorer is a particularly versatile guitar and produces a wide variety of tones. With the pickup selector in the middle position, it produces sounds reminiscent of a Les Paul. Select the bridge position and you have a solid rock tone, finally the neck pickup has a warm and subtle jazzy tone. The Explorer’s large body produces a lot of its tone and although heavy the guitar is full of character and its trademark Gibson bite makes it ideally suited to rock music. Today, many famous artists can be seen using the Explorer. One of the most well known Explorer users is U2’s The Edge. His Explorer (picked up on a shopping trip in New York is the early days of the group) created much of the bands early sound and the guitar is still used on tour and in the studio today. There are many other famous users of the Explorer such as James Hetfield, Eric Clapton, Dave Grohl to name but a few. These days Gibson has many editions of the Explorer and its future is secure. With its trademark looks and versatile sound the Gibson Explorer can comfortably take its place in the guitar hall of fame.
